Disinfection has the same effect as a nuclear bomb

This quote from our webinar (in Dutch) might hit you like a bomb. Disinfection probably seems like a given in the fight against harmful germs and viruses. But there is only one kind of disinfection. Disinfection does not distinguish between the different microorganisms present on a surface. Both bad and good bacteria are wiped out from our hands, tables, and work surfaces. Is that really what we want? That's why we oppose all unnecessary disinfection.

What is effective disinfection?

"Disinfection is the thermal or chemical destruction or inactivation of microorganisms, reducing their number to an acceptable level." (Source: RIVM) We previously shared all our downloadable work plans for disinfecting entryways, office work areas, restrooms, and kitchens. These plans were created by our Boma Academy. They explain why it's important to focus more on disinfecting surfaces which people frequently come into contact with. You'll find a list of contact points in each space that currently require special attention, along with an overview of the recommended disinfection products for each point.

Disinfection doesn't have to be difficult, but quickly wiping a table with a disinfectant cloth or rubbing your hands with sanitizer isn't enough. That's why it's important to follow the correct procedure (as outlined in our work plans). However, continuous disinfection has its disadvantages, nor we do that feel it's always necessary.

What are the drawbacks of disinfection?

Drawback No. 1: Disinfection also eliminates good bacteria

We've explained before that proper disinfection not only removes harmful bacteria from a surface, but also beneficial ones. That's why we sometimes refer to it as a 'nuclear bomb effect'¿-¿everything gets wiped out. It eliminates both good and bad bacteria from their natural environment. But we actually need those good bacteria to achieve long-lasting, deep-clean results.

Drawback No. 2: Improper disinfection can lead to resistance

The second drawback is that if disinfection is not applied correctly¿-¿for example, if parts of the surface are missed¿-¿this can lead to resistance in the environment. This means bad bacteria may survive more and more often.

Disinfection done right

Rule No. 1: Better a good cleaning than a half-hearted disinfection

Good cleaning has a preventive effect. That's why our motto is "Better a good cleaning than a half-hearted disinfection." It's also possible to combine a thorough cleaning with targeted disinfection of contact points in the room.

Rule No. 2: Choose probiotic cleaning products

Still opting for complete disinfection? In that case, restore the balance of positive bacteria as soon as possible by using a probiotic cleaning agent. Disinfection doesn't distinguish between good and bad bacteria or viruses. It's not a matter of survival of the fittest, everything gets wiped out. That's why we make sure the strongest come back. We want the beneficial bacteria that nature¿-¿and we ourselves¿-¿need to get back to work as quickly as possible. With the probiotics, you apply a dose of positive bacteria to all surfaces, which ensures a long-lasting and deep-cleaning effect. To learn more about the effects of probiotics, check out this blog.

Rule No. 3: Download our work plans

We touched on this topic before. Our BOMA Academy has created extremely practical and downloadable work plans to show you exactly how to best clean entryways, office spaces, restrooms, and kitchens. Download them, review them, and keep them close at hand!

Do we need to clean differently now?

The simple answer is no. In the Western world, we already live in a relatively clean and orderly environment. Have you been following a good cleaning plan? In that case, keep it up! Because, as we've explained, good cleaning delivers better results than a partial disinfection Are you wanting to disinfect your surfaces even more? Think of it as an extra step to your current cleaning routine, and include probiotics for a deeper, longer-lasting effect.

What does good cleaning mean?

Good cleaning starts with clean, high-quality equipment. With the right tools, you're halfway done! For heavy or repetitive tasks, use a cleaning machine and don't forget to clean the machine itself. During our webinar, Guus once again demonstrated the impressive absorbency of microfiber cloths. Using them correctly ensures that you always work with clean materials. We've put together a handy leaflet to help you make the most of all our microfiber cloths. Washing the cloths at 90°C provides sufficient disinfection. To eliminate only COVID-19 from the cloths, washing them for about 20 minutes at 60°C is enough.

Does that mean disinfection isn't necessary?

No, it's still important to disinfect contaminated contact points, of course. That's why we recommend targeted disinfection of frequently touched areas. We don't recommend disinfecting all large surfaces. That's only necessary in areas known to present a high risk of contamination. Think of hospital wards or hotel rooms currently being used to provide care services.

So we're ready for the next step!

Here's a good tip: don't opt for the nuclear bomb approach, and instead clean with the same care and attention (and big smile?) as always! The Netherlands and Belgium are preparing their exit strategies. This means they will gradually start easing lockdown measures. Various businesses and facilities are beginning to reopen their doors.

So good hygiene is now more important than ever. That's why we're offering a range of solutions to complement existing measures. This includes our Clean Wipes and Hand Hygiene Stations.
